2018 is off to a great start!

Board Member of YNPN: As of January 2018, I started serving the Young Nonprofit Technology Network (YNPN) of the Triangle as a Board member. YNPN is a nonprofit 501 (c)(3) that helps young nonprofit professionals with networking, resources, and events to help them thrive.

In my role as a Board member, I serve the Marketing & Communications Committee by assisting with content, marketing strategy, and social media to increase engagement of YNPN in the Triangle. I also have the pleasure of working amongst other thought leaders and have thought-provoking discussions about equity and inclusion in the area.

I am excited for what this opportunity will bring as I continue to expand my skills and grow in my role.

Marketing Consulting – N’Kogniito

I also officially started consulting small businesses in marketing and communications. I currently am working with N’Kogniito, a band in Raleigh, NC, started by two brothers who wish to “make the world smile again” with music. I help with social media content, marketing strategy, media, and collateral.

This year, I am keeping busy as I continue my role as Marketing & Communications Director for Carolina Small Business Development Fund and expand my portfolio and passions outside of work.

Stay tuned, there’s more to come!

How It All Started

It all started when I was 18 years old. It was my first encounter with Winston-Salem Industries for the Blind (IFB). Winston-Salem Industries for the Blind is a nonprofit organization whose vision is to provide employment, training, and services to people who are blind or visually impaired.

My dad, who has been working there for ten years as Director of Operations, encouraged me to be part of this program before I went to college.

So I did.

I became part of a Summer Enrichment program which was meant to provide educational experience filled with trips to museums and activities for 10 to 20 children who were visually impaired or blind. I was a mentor to one of them, imgreshis name was Jacob, an 8-year-old funny and vibrant kid who was fully blind.

We became the best of friends. We sat in the bus together and held hands as we walked through forests and lakes that we visited. I remember being scared of the lake and Jacob would always hold my hand firmly and guide me.

Funny because I was supposed to be guiding him.

You’d think I would have an impact on Jacob’s life but he had an impact on mine. He touched my heart and left a feeling of giving.

He made me want to work for a nonprofit organization, for a cause. I knew I was meant to do this. So when I went to college, I aspired to intern and work for a nonprofit. I worked for Special Olympics then for The Kay Yow Cancer Fund.

I find that people excel where their passions are, and this is where my passion is. My passion is in working for a cause where my efforts, sweat, and work will go into helping people. Every day there will be little silly mindless tasks that I will have to do like printing hundreds of papers/ads, or stuffing envelopes, but I know I will be doing it for someone. I will be doing it for a cause, for the community.

This is my story and this is who I am. I went into the field of communications and public relations because I want to have contact both internally and externally with my coworkers and the community so that we may work in a group to accomplish a goal.

Jacob left a feeling in my heart so that I may continue to help others through my skills with my heart and passion in hand.

I realized I haven’t blogged here in a while but that’s only because I’ve been having a lot of fun interning for Pace Communications Inc., in Greensboro, N.C.

I started my internship with Pace in January 2015 as Editorial Digital intern for the multicultural team. I have learned a lot about CMS and literally everything I have to know about WordPress.

imgres

I dedicated most of my time doing the following:

  • Uploading articles onto CMS
  • Creating asides
  • Updating article database
  • Assuring quality of the work before publishing
  • I have also gotten the opportunity to do some writing in both English and Spanish (Being Bilingual comes in handy)

I had the opportunity to work with an agency that does incredible and creative work. From content marketing to really connecting with the client and understanding their needs. This was my first time working in an agency environment. I didn’t realize how much I loved fast-paced work until I started working for Pace.

Unfortunately, my time with Pace has come to an end and I have accepted an offer to work full-time with The Support Center, a nonprofit/ CDFI insititution (Raleigh, N.C.), with a wonderful cause to foster economic development by providing small business loans to the underserved community. I will be working as their Communications and Marketing Associate.

I am very excited for this new journey, especially because I will continue to make a difference in my job by working for a nonprofit organization.

My life has changed in a heartbeat, but I call this living and excelling in the professional world.

This summer has been wonderful. I got the chance to start an internship with Special Olympics North Carolina (SONC) as their Events intern. And it has been oh such a life-changing experience!

I started it out in May and ever since then, my life has changed. I’ve not only gotten the chance to learn a whole new set of skills, but I have gotten to meet the most wonderful and nicest people I have ever encountered.

While interning, I got two supervisors, from which I got different tasks during the week.

  • I got to work with the logistics manager, Morgan, with whom I got to work with the logistics that went into all the events in the summer. We did everything from planning an event to making sure the venues necessary were secured.
  • I also got the chance to work with the families and volunteer director, Katie, with whom I applied my writing skills. I wrote articles, came up with new programs for the organization, updated the website, etc.

The people at SONC are great. I only have one more week left there. It’s sad to think about it but I am now getting ready to embark in a new chapter of my life. But I am really looking forward to next week! I get to go to the SONC Leadership Conference in Raleigh.

I could go on and on about my experience with SONC. It really has changed me for the better. Just being able to make a difference through the work I do is a great feeling. I realized that working for non-profits is something that I’d definitely continue to pursue.

Today, the staff and interns all went out to breakfast together. There, I received this beautiful plaque. I feel really thankful for this wonderful experience and look forward to keep making a difference in everything I do!

Kay Yow Cancer Fund, Make a Difference, The Fund

Interning at the Kay Yow Cancer Fund was everything and so much more than what I expected.

Interning at the Fund was an interesting and inspiring experience for me, especially because it’s such a small organization and I was the first intern they ever had.

As communications and marketing intern, I was in charge of literally doing everything. There were only four people who managed the Fund and they were: Robin Pate, Director of Community Development; Sarah Reese, Operations Coordinator; Megan Smith, Director of Marketing & Development; and last but not least, Sue Donohoe, Executive Director.

Most of the job I got assigned came from Megan. Every week she would have social media projects for me to do. I drafted tweets, Facebook statutes and came up with new ideas and Twitter hash tags to promote the Fund with.  I even got the chance to develop a social media content analysis to see how many people the Fund reached on a monthly basis.

Other than working to improve the Fund’s social media, I was present at their events and helped them sell merchandise. The events were basketball events at NC State.

The Kay Yow Cancer Fund was started by Coach Kay Yow, a former NC State women’s basketball coach whose battle against cancer inspired many. NC State women’s basketball team still dedicates their games to the former Coach Yow and I was lucky enough to be present at the games where the Fund was of high importance to this community.

I would have to say the most entertaining part of working with the Fund was when I got to meet all the former basketball players who had known Kay Yow.

I also got a chance to see how my work inspired and touched people. All the events that we talked about and planned in our meetings during office hours, all the social media plans, were for people and families that had been affected with cancer. I was there to witness how I made a difference and that meant the world to me. I got the chance to interact with different kinds of people. I got to see how cancer affects people. I couldn’t help but think about my grandmother, who had passed away of colon cancer. I knew I was in the right place.

Other than being part of events and applying a lot of my writing skills, I also did “mindless things” as one of my supervisors, Sarah Reese, would call them. I folded hundreds and hundreds of letters and stuck them in envelopes. I sent hundreds of emails to events participants, coaches and donors. I made copies, countless copies. But I got the chance to be the community’s secondary contact and would get a lot of emails with questions. I learned to be more professional by answering people’s questions and being there to help.

But those “mindless things” taught me what work really was about. Drafting tweets and social media plans were just a set of the skills that I got to apply but folding envelopes really made me think about the goal of the Fund and the amount of people we were influencing. I was constantly reminded of the many people who were affected by cancer and that reminder made me want to do anything. If I had to fold 800 letters again, I would do it without hesitation.

On my first day at the Fund, I was asked to join the team at a staff meeting. It was five of us total and they would talk about next month’s events and each person would contribute something and then it would become the topic of conversation.

I would sit there with my pink pad, which I had bought in dedication to the Fund, and just listened. I wrote down the things they said. But then Sue Donohoe said to me “What do you think, Janice?” I was caught off guard. Not only because she had asked for my input, but because I had expected to just sit there and be invisible. I expected to just be assigned a job. It was from that day on that I felt like I was part of a team. I was part of meetings with one of their partners, NIKE, and was lucky enough to work with them and implemented their social media plan. I got the chance to work with Largemouth, their PR associates, to help implement the Fund’s PR plan.

Working with four different people who assigned me different tasks was an interesting yet crazy job. I was challenged in many different ways and sometimes there were things I didn’t know how to do. I learned to work with excel spreadsheets by creating social media content analyses. I even learned how to accurately fold letters, which, if you really think about it, takes a lot of skill. Sue would ask me to edit her letters to coaches. Megan would ask me for social media help. Robin would ask me to organize the merchandise. Sarah asked me to fold letters. They were all different jobs that I learned and grew in knowledge from.

Thanks to working with the Fund, I learned a new set of skills that I can apply in my future internships/jobs.

Thanks to the Fund, I realized that I wanted to keep making a difference and continue my goal to make a difference by working with non-profit organizations. So I applied for another internship in the summer with a non-profit in Morrisville, NC. I will be the events intern for Special Olympics North Carolina, where I will get the chance to work with children/adults with disabilities and have the chance to really make an impact in the community.

When my last day at the Fund comes in a few days, I will be sad but will always remember how great this experience was for me. I will always carry with me Coach Kay Yow’s words of wisdom.

“When life kicks you, let it kick you forward.”

Coach Kay Yow once said, “When life kicks you, let it kick you forward.” And I will always remember that. I will always carry that with me.
